Talent is not a requirement for someone to enjoy taking pictures. If you enjoy doing something... it doesn't make any difference if you are talented at it. I enjoy playing my guitar even though I'm not very talented at it.
Now, to answer the question:
It depends on what you want to do with the pictures. If you want to scrapbook them or make albums, then you'll need a decent photo quality printer. If you want to tweak your pictures before printing, then you'll want a good photo editing program (the programs that come with the cameras don't do much). If you want to create CD or DVD slideshows, then you'll want to get a good video editing software and DVD authoring program.

I have no idea what else heheIf ya get a powerful little digital camera with a built in zoom lens & macro you'll be fine.
I'm a semi-pro photographer & keep the little camera with me all the time its more convenient to use most of the time.
Digital slr's are larger, expensive & heavy & if youre not careful you can get dust on the CCD sensor while changing lenses meaning big money for a cleaning.
Later on get a lightweight tripod for the macro pictures & pics you want to be included in during the holidays.
P.S.
You dont need to break your piggy bank $250 for a tripod unless your seriously going Pro.tripod, reflector/s, lights, a light tent, a grey card, the list just goes on
a night school course would be handy
aIf you're getting a DSLR, I would recommend a circular polarizer filter, an 81A warming filter... extra batteries and removing name brand labels from your carrying bag/case. I've had several friends cars broken into because they left a camera bag sitting in their backseat... When people who know see "Lowepro" or any other well known maker of camera bags labels that translates to "expensive toys".
Also, if you're getting a DSLR, I would recommend getting step-up rings for any lenses that don't have 77mm filter threads. This will allow you to be able to only have to buy one size of filters and they'll fit on all of your lenses... rather than going crazy keeping track of all the different sizes for different lenses, etc.a large bank account
